New synth = good workout for stereo sytem

Bought a new Yamaha MM6 "Mini-Mo" synthesizer.

It's called that 'cause it uses the same basic engine as in the more expensive Yamaha MOTIF keyboards. Told my wife it was for my labor to redo her kitchen. For what it cost, it's a lot of fun. Just wanted something to goof around on. Kinda wanted to get a little nicer board (like a Roland Juno) but the next step up seems to be $1000 - $1100 or so. The MM6 with a $100 rebate from Yamaha was $406.00 It lists for $600.

Man does it make the speakers work. Decided to cross the JBL 2446j's over a little higher than 500Hz 'cause they sounded like they were flappin' (is that a good word?....) a bit when certain organs or synths were played down low. Got a Rane AC23 x-over w/ 24db/octave slope. I'm sure that part of my problem is that I don't have a big enough amp driving them. All I'm using is an Alesis 50 w/ch. amp. For the most part, in my garage that's all I really need. It almost seems like it sounds better now. Don't know exactly what frequency it's crossed over at, but it's 2 detents up from 500. Still want to play w/ the time delay and got a lot of woofers to recone, but it's only time and $$$.....

I'm using 4 JBL 4311 studio monitors for surround sound.

Got 4 Altec 515's that I think are from 1953. If memory serves me correctly, that would make them 515a's. What can be done to these drivers to make them handle more power ? Do you think it's worth sticking the $$ into them or should I look for some of the newer 515g's ? I've had lots of 515b's and while they sounded great in my 210's, I was always wishing they could handle more power.

Suggestions ???

Are you runing your 210's through an Altec x-over(N500C ?) or is your system bi or tri-amped ?

Synths are fun!

Just a precaution, you might want to verify that the highest volume setting of the synth doesn't exceed your amp's input sensitivity (so you can't clip it).

Seems kind of obtuse for a device that makes square waves, I know...

yeah, im running two sets of 210's. one in the garage, straight from an old altec reciever thru 809 crossovers and the others are tri-amped, upstairs in the living room. used to think my a-5s rocked, hehehe. though running my rta has shown some driver fatigue in my horns. time to call bill pretty soon for new phrams

Have you got 515B's in your 210's ?

What kind of amps are you using ?

You should hear some of the drum sounds coming out of that little Yamaha synth.....

the triamped setup im runnin is b's. the other is loaded with e's. i cross into the b's at 100 hz, and out of them, anywhere from 500 hz to 1200 hz, using a rane 23 setup as well. running mostly altec 9444 amps. a buddy uses a dmpro drum trigger setup in his band, if your synth can do that sort of thing, ill bet it'll pound!
